FEATURED UPCOMING EVENT

🎥 May-28 webinar - Testing software is awful: Here is how we can fix it

Let's be honest: testing software is awful.

According to GitHub, developers spend the same amount of time writing tests as they do writing new code (and an equal amount of time waiting for build and test cycles). Between writing tests and waiting for tests, who has time or strength to then troubleshoot a test failure?

Join this open discussion with Java Champions Trisha Gee and Brian Demers for an in-depth conversation about testing.

Together, we'll discuss top testing challenges developers have to overcome—such as regularly dealing with long test cycles, slow and frustrating troubleshooting, a "forever war" with flaky tests, and the upcoming impact of AI-generated tests on projects.

We’ll acknowledge the hit to developer morale and productivity around all of the above…and then talk about how to fix it!

INDUSTRY NEWS

Gradle, Inc. joins Scala Center Advisory Board to improve Scala developer experience

We’re excited to announce that Gradle has joined the Scala Center Advisory Board, the open source foundation for the Scala programming language. We look forward to being an active participant in discussions about improving the Scala ecosystem, including how to best equip Scala developers with the right tools to enhance their experience and productivity.

“We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to collaborate with Gradle on improving the Scala developer experience. We value their shared commitment to bringing advanced productivity tooling like Develocity to the Scala community to enhance the daily lives of developers and drive innovation.”

- Professor Martin Odersky, creator of Scala and head of the programming research group at EPFL

In the last year, Develocity has expanded support for sbt, including Build Scan® and Build Cache, providing previously unavailable acceleration, troubleshooting, and observability features to Scala developers. Hans Dockter, co-founder and CEO of Gradle, Inc. commented:

“Multi-build system support is core to our mission and vision. We imagine a world where tools and strategies that improve the developer experience are available for all software development ecosystems, no matter the build system or framework. Scala developers deserve to experience the same level of productivity support as the rest of the JVM ecosystem. By joining the Scala Center Advisory Board, we will be able to help assess critical pain points and bring more tools and solutions to this community.”

Taming Flaky Tests: Trisha Gee on developer productivity and testing best practices

Recently, Java Champion and Gradle developer advocate, Trisha Gee, sat down with InfoQ’s Shane Hastie to talk about software testing

If you’re a Trisha fan, this is a great chance to learn more about the continual challenge of flaky tests, their impact on team morale and productivity, best practices to make this problem easier to solve, and how AI plays a role in the future of our test feedback loops and test reliability.

If you struggle with flaky tests, then you might like to learn more about Develocity Flaky Test Detection. That’s just one of the features we let you try in your own project during a guided Develocity trial. Over a period of weeks, you'll work hand-in-hand with our engineers to accelerate your feedback cycles, troubleshoot with more clarity and ease, and get end-to-end observability into your entire toolchain. Toast turns up the heat on slow builds with Gradle and DPE

Aida Issayeva, tech lead for the Point of Sale productivity team at our customer Toast, sat down with The New Stack to describe their productivity journey over the last few years.

Leveraging DPE best practices, Gradle, and Develocity, they reduced Android build cycles from 78 to 27 minutes, and gained deep observability into their software toolchain. Check out Aida’s talk from DPE Summit 2024 or read this blog to learn more about Toast’s story.
