How Google measures productivity

With some of the largest deployments in the world, Google takes DPE very seriously—so much so that Google Engineering productivity researchers, Ciera Jaspan and Collin Green, have built "Developer Productivity for Humans", a multipart series published in IEEE Magazine.

The latest installment in the series focuses on the challenge of build latency. Ciera and Collin explore the “magic number” for build times to keep developers focused, explain why humans are bad at estimating times, and discuss why even small improvements to build times have a positive and outsized impact on team productivity. Read more to learn why Google believes in the value of DPE and build & test performance acceleration technologies.

How Spring Boot builds went from 1 hour to just 7 minutes

In the dynamic world of open-source projects, the Spring Boot team, a vital part of the Java ecosystem, grappled with a challenge slowing down their progress: extensive build times. Their build process, both local and on CI, would take an hour or more, affecting their productivity. The team leveraged DPE practices and technologies like Gradle Enterprise to address their challenges.

This blog post will walk you through the highlights of this journey based on an in-depth interview with Andy Wilkinson, staff engineer at VMware and Spring team developer.

EXPERT TAKES

Gartner’s 2023 Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies features DevX theme

Gartner added “developer experience” as a major theme in their 2023 Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies, providing further evidence that developer experience and developer productivity have arisen as key areas of interest for IT executives.

Along with the other themes of Emergent AI, Pervasive cloud, and Human-centric security and privacy, Gartner’s DevX theme emphasizes the value of retaining and attracting top talent and optimizing software delivery with a selection of technologies expected to plateau in the next 2 to 5 years:

  • AI-augmented software engineering, the use of AI technologies and natural language processing (NLP) to help software engineers create, deliver and maintain applications.

  • API-centric SaaS, a cloud application service designed with programmatic request/reply or event-based interfaces (APIs) as the primary methods of access.

  • GitOps, a type of closed-loop control system for cloud-native applications.

  • Internal developer portals, which enable self-service discovery and access to resources in complex, cloud-native software development environments.

  • Open-source program office (OSPO), the center of competency to build strategies for governing, managing, promoting and efficiently using open-source software (OSS) and open-source data or models.

To learn more about internal developer portals specifically, watch the recent DPE Lowdown with Spotify discussing Backstage—their open-source DevX platform—and check out the full Gartner article to better grasp the implications of DevX on emerging technologies.
